Dressing up as a favourite book character encourages children to engage more deeply with stories, explore characters and themes, and develop a stronger connection to reading. Just as importantly, seeing classmates dressed as different characters often sparks curiosity about new books and authors, inspiring children to broaden their reading horizons.

The benefits of reading extend far beyond the classroom. Regular reading strengthens vocabulary, improves comprehension and critical thinking skills, and supports academic success across all subject areas. Reading also nurtures imagination, creativity and empathy, allowing children to experience different perspectives, cultures and ideas. Through books, students learn about themselves and the world around them, developing the confidence and knowledge to navigate an increasingly complex society. Perhaps most importantly, reading provides opportunities for reflection, relaxation and enjoyment in a world that is often busy and fast-paced.

As a school, we encourage every student to make time for reading each day. Whether it is a novel, a magazine, a biography, a graphic novel or even sharing a story together as a family, every reading experience has value. Parents play a vital role in fostering positive reading habits by modelling reading at home, talking about books and creating opportunities for reading to become part of daily life. A love of reading is one of the greatest gifts we can nurture in our children, opening doors to learning, curiosity and lifelong growth. As we reflect on a successful Book Week, I encourage both students and parents to continue the momentum by picking up a book, exploring a new author and making reading a regular and enjoyable part of everyday life.

Ticketing

This year we will again be booking tickets for Speech Night online through the QPAC booking system.

• Bookings will open for Year 12 parents only this Friday 4 September, and these families will receive an email on Friday at 9am with the details of how to make their booking.
• Tickets will open to the rest of the school at 5pm on 6 October. The prize reading assembly occurs on this day.

Please note: your daughters will receive their tickets at school (they will not be sitting with you) and therefore you do not need to book seats for them.

The following students will be required to attend Speech Night:

• All Years 11 and 12 students. All students in Year 12 will be required to wear a Church dress. Only prize winners in Year 11 will be required to wear a Church dress. ºÚÁÏÉçudents in Year 11 who are not prize winners will wear their school middy.
• All boarders will be attending. Boarders who are not prize winners or in Year 12 will wear their school middy.
• All additional prize winners in Years 5-10 and musicians are required to wear a Church dress.

The Church dress is available for purchase or hire from our Supplies Shop.

• Year 12 ºÚÁÏÉçudents will be able to go to the School Supplies Shop to arrange their church dress from Monday 7 September.
• Musicians can start arranging their Church Dress from Monday 14 September.
• Prize winners will be able to arrange their Church Dress following the Prize Reading Assembly on Tuesday 6 October.

Music Department Survey

As part of our ongoing commitment to providing excellence in music education at ºÚÁÏÉç Margaret’s, we are currently undertaking a consultation process to help shape the future direction of our Music Department. As part of this process, an external consultant has put together a short survey, and we would be very grateful if parents could take a few minutes to share their thoughts and feedback. Your insights will play an important role in helping us understand what is working well and where we can improve, ensuring the department is in the best possible shape as we look ahead to the exciting opportunities our new Performing Arts Precinct will bring. These times call for connection. Connection with one another, with our neighbours (near and far), and with the earth. Wilson’s book is named after a line from Rebecca Elson’s poem “Antidotes to Fear of Death.” I had not encountered the poem until this week. It is the last poem Elson wrote, and she wrote it from her death bed. It begins:

Sometimes as an antidote
to fear of death,
I eat the stars.

Those nights, lying on my back,
I suck them from the quenching dark
til they are all, all inside me,
pepper hot and sharp.

The poem speaks of finding solace and hope amid the fear. Wilson unpacks this by calling for a profound presence to the present. How can we live most fully in the “now” so that a future marked by hope might unfurl before us? Let us begin by being profoundly present: to ourselves, our families, our communities, and the world that God so loves.

Let us pray for Nepal and Tibet, and all those affected by the flash flood

Gracious and loving God, our lives are in your hands. When we are overwhelmed with grief and shock, confronted by mortality and the fragility of life, for others and for ourselves, remind us of your presence with us. We pray for the people of Nepal and Tibet, for all whose lives were suddenly taken; for those who remain lost in the turmoil; for their families and friends, nearby and across the world; for first responders and aid workers reaching out in care; for generosity and compassion from world leaders and all who have capacity to respond; and for those who will commit to the long term rebuilding of lives.

Challenge our complacency about climate change and the devastation brought about by human activity across the world. Comfort the people of Nepal and Tibet, bring them peace, and disturb our complacency, so that we will be agents of transformation and signs of your compassion, your love and care. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Most importantly, every dollar raised goes directly back to our boarders, helping to provide opportunities, experiences, resources, and initiatives that enhance life within our boarding community. The impact of your generosity will be felt by our students throughout the year, and for that, we are incredibly grateful.

To celebrate the conclusion of the raffle, our boarder parents generously hosted a BBQ for the boarders. It was a wonderful opportunity to come together, celebrate this fantastic achievement, and acknowledge the incredible support shown by so many people.

ºÚÁÏÉçrategies for turning stress into productivity:

• Plan. Schedule your time to incorporate work from multiple subjects and breaks for socialising, exercising, eating and sleeping.
• Be realistic about how much work you can complete in a session. If you usually only focus for 30 minutes at a time, don’t plan to work for three hours straight.
• Breathe. ºÚÁÏÉçep away from your work area, take some deep breaths and stretch every now and then. This gets the blood flowing and ensures your brain has plenty of oxygen.
• Reward yourself. This could be going out with friends, watching TV, anything that you look forward to. Make sure you schedule these things in to keep your motivation going.
• Sleep. Aim for 10 hours a night whenever possible, plan to have 30 minutes of screen free time before bed to aid the transition.

One of the most effective ways students can use AI is to support retrieval practice and spaced practice, two evidence-based study strategies that strengthen long-term memory and understanding. Rather than simply rereading notes, retrieval practice requires students to actively recall information from memory, while spaced practice involves revisiting content over time.

Here are some practical ways students can use NotebookLM and Gemini at home:

1. Turn notes into quizzes
   ºÚÁÏÉçudents can upload class notes and ask the AI to generate short-answer questions, multiple-choice quizzes, or exam-style practice questions. The key is to answer the questions before checking notes or solutions.
2. Create a personalised revision timetable
   AI can help students organise their revision by scheduling regular review sessions across several weeks, ensuring that important concepts are revisited rather than crammed the night before a test.
3. Use AI as a study coach
   Instead of providing answers, students can ask NotebookLM or Gemini to quiz them one question at a time, provide hints, or identify areas that require further study.
4. Generate flashcards in seconds
   AI can quickly create flashcards for vocabulary, formulas, key dates, definitions, and other essential knowledge, helping students test their recall regularly.

As parents, one of the best questions you can ask your daughter is not, “What did the AI tell you?” but rather, “How did the AI help you practise what you already know?” When students use AI to retrieve, test, explain, and revisit their learning, these tools become powerful supports for developing independent and effective study habits.

This isn't another instalment on the dangers of too much time online. It's an attempt to understand what our girls are actually doing when they pick up their phones, why they're doing it, and what we, as their school and as their parents, can usefully do about it.

Part One looks at Australia's world first social media ban, now almost a year old, and asks honestly whether it's working. Part Two turns to something newer again: the rise of AI companions, and what it means for a teenage girl to have a "friend" in her pocket who never disagrees with her. Part Three ends on a more hopeful note, with the quiet ambition movement, a shift among young people away from performing their lives online and towards defining success on their own terms.

Part One: Is the Ban Working?

Australia became the first country in the world to ban social media for under 16s, and nine months on, the early evidence is worth sitting with honestly. Government and academic evaluations have found that most young teenagers have found ways around the restriction, using accounts registered to someone older, private browsers, or platforms the ban doesn't cover. Daily use among young teens has dropped only slightly. The law can close a door. It cannot, on its own, change what happens on the other side of it.

The ban also arrives alongside a bigger story. Meta recently agreed to pay close to eighteen billion US dollars to settle claims from 29 states that it knowingly designed its platforms to be addictive to young users, while understating the harm internally. It's a significant admission, in effect if not in name, that these platforms were never neutral spaces.

So where does that leave a family trying to do the right thing at home, when the legislation designed to help is proving hard to enforce?

I'd suggest the ban was always going to be a floor, not a solution. It reduces exposure, but it can't build a young woman's judgement for her. That has to be grown deliberately, through conversation, through modelling, and through the slow, unglamorous work of helping her sit with things like boredom and social uncertainty without immediately reaching for her phone.

ºÚÁÏÉçaying the course, in practical terms, means resisting the temptation to see the ban as the finish line. It means continuing to ask curious questions rather than only monitoring and continuing to talk openly about news like the Meta settlement, so she understands the systems she's navigating rather than simply being told to avoid them. The legislation has bought us time and leverage. What we do with it is still very much up to us.

Arts Spectacular provided a magnificent conclusion to a wonderful week of celebration. It was a true joy to witness our Years 5 and 6 students so confidently share their artistic talents with our school community. The theme, 'Symphony of Life', was vibrantly brought to life as the Year 6 girls interpreted the four elements (kitchen, bees, frogs and school) through imaginative and creative artistic works of individually designed headpieces. These creations were proudly showcased with dance and song adding further energy and expression to the evening. The Year 5 choir provided a fitting and spectacular finale leaving the audience in no doubt about the confidence and creativity of the girls.

I was incredibly proud of all our students and grateful to staff; Donna Free, Macey Devitt and Regina Brennan for guiding the girls’ artistic talents and Annette Box for her artistic direction. Many thanks also to the backstage staff. Thank you to the Year 5 parents who organised the food and to the families for attending and supporting both the girls and the event. Arts Spectacular is further evidence of the school’s commitment to the Arts. 

On Sunday, the focus shifted to academics and problem-solving as two teams competed in the Opti-MINDS competition. The challenge required them to write, dramatize, and present to judges. The preparation and presentation provide an opportunity for students to work collaboratively, a skill for life. Well done to the members of the two teams and thank you to Kylie Briggs for training the girls.

The girls have not been quiet on the sporting front with many competing in Andrews Cup Athletics and Cricket over the past fortnight. Congratulations to the Cricket Open B who placed second and the D White who achieved third place. Thank you to Terry Humphreys for his coordination of these competitions and to the coaches for their support of the girls.

The activities shared collectively, highlight the well-roundedness of the education we provide and the students who seize the opportunities to embrace the arts, sports, and academics alike.

One of the first is the introduction of lockers and the Panama hat at lunchtimes from the start of Year 6. This helps prepare the girls for their Year 7 academic experience and also adds extra weight to the much-anticipated "Panama Throw" in the Atrium on the girls' last day of Year 6. This year, we have introduced two new elements to the Year 6 experience: the option to purchase a ºÚÁÏÉç Margaret's school blazer to wear in Year 6 (compulsory from Year 7), and a new school diary (the same one used in secondary school) to help the girls build strong planning and organisational habits ahead of their senior years. Together, these initiatives recognise the Year 6 girls' role as leaders within the primary school and support their steps towards secondary study.

From this Friday, the official transition program begins as part of the "Class of 2032" series. The first of three days gives the girls a chance to meet their Head of Year and House Captains, complete some Academic Assessment Services (AAS) testing and have fun with a range of interactive activities. On 23 October, the girls take part in the second day, experiencing more fully what a day in the life of a Year 7 ºÚÁÏÉç Margaret's girl looks like. A third and final day rounds out the journey, bringing together everything the girls have learned so far to leave them well prepared for their next big adventure. On this day they also meet their form teachers and form class. ºÚÁÏÉçaff and students from both the primary and secondary schools are heavily involved in this process, with careful planning behind every step to ensure our girls feel confident and future-ready.

In the meantime, the Year 6 girls have plenty to look forward to before the year is out from their Final Chapel and Morning Tea Presentations, to the Acknowledgement Assembly, Disco, Activities Day, Cornerstone Project, Maggie's Got Talent, and of course, the Panama Toss. These milestones give the girls a meaningful way to celebrate their time in primary school and step into the next chapter with wonderful memories. We look forward to sharing in these special occasions with you, and to supporting your daughters as they prepare for Year 7.

Aspiring Young Women's Networking Breakfast Performance 

Thank you to Hope (Year 11) who gave an amazing performance on trumpet of Allegro by Guy Ropartz at the recent Aspiring Young Women’s Networking Breakfast. The performance was brilliant and virtuosic and thoroughly appreciated by everyone in attendance.

Interhouse Music Week 

Congratulations to all students who performed last week in the Secondary Interhouse Music Week performances, whether that was as Interhouse Open Mic event or the special morning tea performances at the Canopy Café. The Clarinet/Flute/Saxophone/Brass/Percussion Ensembles and Sculthorpe/Beath ºÚÁÏÉçring Quartets all provided very entertaining performances to a receptive student audience. It was also fantastic to hear students performing across all the year levels at the Interhouse Open Mic event held throughout lunchtimes during the week. ºÚÁÏÉçay tuned for the announcement of individual and house winners at the end of term assembly!

Open Mic 

Our Term 3 Open Mic Session was held on Tuesday this week. Congratulations to all students who performed. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to showcase their musical talents to the broader student community, and wonderful to have so many girls supporting the performances in the Barley Sugar Gardens. Thank you, especially to our 2026 Music Captains for their assistance in organising the event.

Soloists' Recital #3

Congratulations to all students who performed at the third Soloists Recital for the year on Wednesday afternoon in the Arts Centre Foyer. It was a lovely afternoon of music with a wide range of styles performed on a variety of different instruments. All girls should be exceptionally proud of their performances!

Music Dinner 

The music captains are very excited to announce the theme for this year’s Music Dinner will be MUSIC ICONS! Music Dinner will be held in Term 4 on Friday 9 October from 5:30pm and is a wonderful event where we can celebrate the achievements of our music students throughout the year and also acknowledge our outgoing music seniors. ºÚÁÏÉçudents (and parents) are encouraged to come along dressed according to the theme. We always love seeing everyone’s creativity! All music students in Years 7-12 involved in music ensembles are encouraged to attend. Any Year 6 students involved in music ensembles are also welcome to join us for the evening (and will be chaperoned by a music staff member). Parents of students in Years 9-12 who have been involved in the Co-curricular music program for the year are welcome to attend. Should extra tickets become available, parents of Years 6-8 attending the music dinner will be given the opportunity to also purchase tickets.

Tickets are $82.50 for students and $110 for adults and are available only through . For catering purposes, it is imperative you include any dietary requirements and payments are made by 5:00pm, Tuesday 22 September. Please be mindful there is a capped number, so book your tickets early! The cut-off time allows the Music Support Group and Catering to finalise purchasing of perishable goods and appropriate table allocations prior to the event.

Viva La Musica!

ºÚÁÏÉçradivari ºÚÁÏÉçrings, Jackson Wind Ensemble, Volare and Encorah are very much looking forward to presenting performances at the upcoming Viva La Musica concert to be held in the Phillip Harris Gym on Monday 14 September at 6:30pm. This will be a fantastic opportunity for these ensembles to showcase their hard work throughout 2026. This will be their final performance for the year as auditions will be held in Week 3 of Term 4 for 2027 ensembles. We look forward to having many in attendance to support the students. Last Saturday, our ºÚÁÏÉç Margaret’s rowing team competed in the 2026 BRSA Head of the River at Wyaralong Dam. As has been the tradition in previous years, our 200 strong team provided the entrance of the day, flying the Maggies represent flag as they marched onto the competitor headland. Before the start of racing, Reverend Jazz did a blessing with Rowing Coordinator, Ms Karathanasopoulos reading a prayer to give our girls an extra lift for the day. With the majority of our crews rowing well throughout the day, at the end of the regatta ºÚÁÏÉç Margaret’s was awarded 2^nd place in both the aggregate and percentage cup trophies. Congratulations to all our rowers, particularly to our seniors who have now rowed for the last time as ºÚÁÏÉç Margaret’s representatives. Rowing is a sport that involves a huge commitment from both the students, their families, as well as the coaching team. A big thank you to both Jack Armitage and Ms Karathanasopoulos for their leadership and organisation of this program. Rowing isn’t quite finished for 2026 with a group of students heading off to the QLD ºÚÁÏÉçate Titles in Rockhampton at the beginning of the school holidays.

On Saturday, 5 September, our QG Netball, Volleyball, Tennis and Hockey teams will be playing a home round against Brisbane ºÚÁÏÉçate High School. With only two rounds to go in winter fixtures, some of our teams can take the pennant in their respective divisions. Please show your support to all our teams who have participated this winter season and come along!

Best of luck to our Club Netball teams continuing their Finals journey this Saturday. The following teams will be playing in preliminary finals: STM 1, STM 9, STM 13, STM 17, STM 18. Please see the Club Netball POD page for game times. It would be great to see lots of Maggies supporters on the sidelines at Downey Park. A special call out to STM 19 who have made it straight through to the grand final and have this weekend off.

ºÚÁÏÉç Margaret’s Club Water Polo have a record number of players registered for the 2026 – 2027 season and trials have commenced this week with many students attending these sessions. Please ensure that you have checked out the POD page for trial sessions for your age group. We do understand that some students will have some clashes across other sports at this time of the year, please ensure that you contact Mrs Angela Crowe who will be able to assist in your attending other trial times if needed.

Hiring of the Church Dress for Year 12 students will commence on Monday 7 September. Church Dress hire forms must be completed and signed by a parent or guardian if the student is under 18 years of age. The hire form is available at this link to The POD: . A Deposit holding fee of $115 is payable for the hire of the Church Dress and upon return (as per conditions listed on the hire form) a refund of $70 will be given.  Plain white fold down ankle socks (not ºÚÁÏÉç Margaret’s competition socks), brown school shoes and a white ribbon are to be worn with the dress.
